From Job Loss To Home Business - Making Lifetime Dreams Come True | Doug's Story

November 9, 2010 was the day I signed my “Dear Doug” job termination letter that ended a 22-year career in Corporate America. It was the letter I had been anxiously awaiting since August, it turned out be my great reset.

Imagine the shock I felt when I read an email, I was not supposed to receive that day in August sitting at my desk in Moncton, Brunswick. It read, “we are moving ahead on a corporate merger and downsizing across North America and selling off locations in Canada”. Not good news for me!

The Crisis Begins

The financial crisis of 2007–2008, also known as the global financial crisis, was a severe worldwide economic crisis. As a corporation, we felt the financial pressures. Many of our customers were closing operations and many smaller competitors were being acquired by larger companies in the industry. 

Corporate Merger and Downsizing 

This impact to this merger and downsizing of the operations resulted in my role becoming redundant in Canada. Walking away from a 22-year career is something you never take lightly. Corporate left me no choice.

At the time, I was a single dad with three young kids having just recently built a new home. I have to admit, it was a scary time, losing my job and the financial security a salary brings.

Exiting A 22 Year Career

I consulted with an employment lawyer and began to work with a mentor. Through their support I decided it was time to use this opportunity to pursue my lifelong dream of being self-employed working from home. 

I made up my mind that I was leaving my 22-year career in the industry. I figured the worst-case scenario if I'm not successful doing "my own thing" by creating a full-time income from home, then I can just go get another job. What do I have to lose at this point in my life?

Following a Long-Held Dream

My first experience with home-based business was in the late 1990’s, part time on the internet. That little venture seeded the entrepreneurial spirit that lingered for many years while I was busy climbing the corporate ladder and having a family. 

In 2008 I was introduced to a unique nutritional opportunity. I started taking those products. I loved it! Lost a few pounds and got my bloodwork back to normal. I was feeling great.

People noticed and began to ask what I was doing. I showed them how to order it. The company started sending me “Thank You” checks for the referrals. That’s when I started claiming home-based tax write-offs again, which later became the subject of my self-published book.

Making My Dream Come True - My Great Reset

I have been here for my family every step along the way managing my own schedule. This decision has completely changed my mindset, my outlook on life and even my physical health. I've learned more and have grown more in these years than I have in my entire adult life.

When we take a different view of a job termination it can lead us to finding our life purpose, passion and a sense of freedom not possible otherwise.
